Student Reflections: Melodie
Recently we connected with one of our lovely students, Melodie, to hear her journey in finding both yoga and Open Concept…
How and why did you find your way to yoga?
I was introduced to yoga way back in 2007 by one of Open Concept’s teachers, Sandy Grewinski. Shortly after, I moved to Vancouver where I practiced for 15 years, making yoga a core part of my routine. Now that I’m back in Winnipeg, I'm delighted to have found such a beautiful studio to continue my practice. I originally turned to yoga to help with consistent pain in my knees from childhood until my early twenties, and once I started practicing regularly the pain went away. Yoga has helped me stay strong and balanced while finishing university, starting businesses, juggling multiple clients and projects, etc. I love that it’s a practice that challenges both the physical and mental aspects of well-being, there is no better stress reliever. I'm getting close to 20 years of practice and still have so much to learn - it never gets boring!
What you've gained both in class and in life off your mat?
I've gained physical and mental stability in all aspects of life! How nice to have a hobby that gives you the benefit of a peaceful mind via meditation and breathwork, along with an incredible, strong and nimble body! Thanks to yoga I plan on being spry 'til I die.
Can you share with us a little about your experience with Open Concept?
Open Concept is simply a beautiful space and vibe, with a collection of exceptional teachers! I've found the teachers are a cut above— having an experienced, thoughtful teacher can make or break a class, and OC has done a great job sourcing the crème de la crème. The opportunity to connect with both teachers and community members in a beautifully designed space is an added bonus.
