Student Reflections: Jeremy
If you've ever been to our studio, you've likely seen Jeremy! Not only are we so grateful to have Jeremy in class with us pretty much everyday, but also consider ourselves incredibly lucky to share space with such a beautiful human, inside and out. Recently we connected with Jeremy to hear his journey in finding both yoga and Open Concept…
How and why did you find your way to yoga?
I started yoga two years ago when I felt like I needed something new. I’m a nurse, and my job can be pretty stressful, so I was looking for a healthier way to manage it. I felt kind of disconnected from my body and emotions and thought yoga would be a good way to work on that. For my 31st birthday, I bought myself a yoga pass, and it ended up being the best gift I could have ever given myself! I was so nervous since I hadn’t ever done yoga before and couldn’t even touch my toes! But I did a 30-day challenge early on and it helped me not only get better at yoga, but also connect with the amazing community here. Everyone was kind and supportive and I felt realty comfortable, even when I kept falling over (which happened a lot)!
What you've gained both in class and in life off your mat?
Yoga has made such a huge impact on my life. I’ve gained flexibility (both in my body and mind) and I’m way better at managing stress. Physically, I’m stronger, and mentally, I’m just happier! I’ve also found a routine that works for me, and I’m able to do things I never thought I’d be able to do—still working on that handstand though! The biggest surprise has been how much yoga has helped me in my personal life too. My mindset has really shifted, and it’s helped me handle difficult situations with more patience and understanding. I’m way kinder to myself and others, and I’ve made so many amazing friends.
Do you have any favourite classes?
I love variety! I’ll take anything from a power flow to a super chill restorative class. I actually find the slower classes harder though because those long holds really test my patience! Recently, I’ve been really into the Ashtanga classes. They’re challenging, and having the set sequence gives the practice a totally different vibe.
Can you share with us a little about your experience with Open Concept?
From the early pop-ups to the opening, I’ve always felt comfortable here. The space is warm, the vibe is chill, and they are welcoming to everyone—whether you’re in a good mood or bad, a beginner or a seasoned yogi. You can just hang in the lounge, or if you’re feeling it, head into the studio space for some personal time. I love that it’s such an open, welcoming space for all types of people.
Also, I don’t think I would’ve stuck with yoga if it weren’t for the community. The team here makes everyone feel like family. I’ve met so many cool people from all walks of life, and it’s been amazing hearing everyone’s story about how they ended up here. The friendships I’ve made have been such a huge bonus to my yoga journey. Each teacher has their own unique style, and I love learning from all of them. They push you to grow in a way that feels super supportive, which I really appreciate. Open Concept has honestly just felt like home since day one.
